Cancer cells are able to escape Programmed Cell Death due to abnormalities in its three fundamental mechanisms- Apoptosis, Necrosis and Autophagy. In Subject 04, we delve into the interrelationship between the different proteins of these three mechanisms as related to the activation of Apoptosis, the conditions that trigger Necrosis in a tumor and how in specific cell types, Autophagy transforms from a recycling process of cellular components to one that provides nutrients to cancer cells and promotes cell death.

Apoptosis: its activation by p53 (intrinsic pathway) and by the immune system (extrinsic pathway), and the execution phase.
Evasion of apoptosis: mutations in caspases and inhibition of Pi3K/AKT/PTEN signaling pathway.
Induction of autophagy.
Ischemia and necrosis.
